Gerard is an experienced lawyer and a partner at Downie Stewart lawyers Dunedin. He is a former President of the Otago Branch of the New Zealand Law Society.
He has extensive experience in business issues, trusts, relationship property and general property matters. He has mediated a wide range of issues. Gerard lectures Business Law in the School of Business at the University of Otago and authors the Partnerships and Joint Ventures title for Westlaw.
Gerard was a nationally ranked squash player and subsequently Chair of Squash New Zealand and then Chair and Vice President of the World Squash Federation. He currently chairs the World Squash Federation Disciplinary Commission.
He is also Chair of Recovered Living NZ which has established a residential treatment centre for eating disorders in North Canterbury that operates as a charity on a not-for-profit basis.
